Allergies Q & A
What are allergies?
Allergies are an overreaction by the immune system to certain materials that are usually harmless in other people. Children can develop allergies to a number of common substances, such as:
- Mold
- Pollen
- Insect bites
- Pet dander
- Cigarette smoke
Kids may also be allergic to certain foods, especially dairy products and different types of nuts.
What are the symptoms of allergies?
Common symptoms of allergies in children include coughing and sneezing. Your child may also complain of an upset stomach in the case of food allergies.
In some children, allergic reactions can be mild and not interfere with their usual activities. However, if allergy symptoms become severe, they can cause additional health concerns such as skin rashes or trigger an asthma attack.
For some children, there’s a risk for anaphylactic shock, a potentially life-threatening condition that makes it difficult for your child to breathe.
How are allergies diagnosed?
If you’re unsure what’s causing an allergic reaction in your child, Dr. Valencia may recommend allergy testing.
Allergy testing introduces a variety of common substances to your child’s skin. A swollen, red bump usually appears within 20 minutes of testing if your child is allergic to a particular substance.
What treatments are available for allergies?
Once she understands the root cause of your child’s allergy, Dr. Valencia can develop a customized treatment plan that includes ways to avoid certain allergies. As every child is different, her plan caters to your child’s specific needs.
To help your child manage their allergy symptoms, she may recommend one or more treatment options. In some cases, children respond well to medications that prevent symptoms such as sneezing or itchy eyes.
For severe allergy issues that may produce anaphylactic shock, Dr. Valencia can discuss an emergency preparedness plan that may involve carrying an EpiPen®, an injectable medication that can prevent a life-threatening situation. She can also work with you to create an allergy-free environment at home for your child.
For children that suffer from asthma as a result of allergy triggers, a prescription inhaler can be useful for keeping their airways open and preventing serious breathing issues. Food allergies require dietary planning to avoid allergic reactions. Dr. Valencia can provide guidance for ensuring your child gets the proper nutrition without including possible allergens.
